Interim Federal Health Program
Learn about your health care coverage as a refugee or an asylum seeker in Canada
Changes to the Interim Federal Health program are coming, however all patients with IFHP coverage will continue to pay $0 for PrEP with us and access all clinic and lab testing services free.
What is the Interim Federal Health Program (IFHP)?
The program provides temporary health coverage for eligible individuals, including refugees and asylum seekers and other groups, until they transition to provincial or territorial health insurance.
What does the IFHP program cover?
- Prescription medications (including PrEP and HIV treatment medications)
- Basic medical care (doctor and nurse visits and hospital services)
- Lab and diagnostic services (blood tests and ultrasounds)
- Extended health care (examples include dental care, vision care, counselling)
What’s Changing as of May 1, 2026?
As part of the federal government’s new budget, they are introducing co-payments for some IFHP benefits. They include:
- $4 per eligible prescription medication
- 30% of the cost of other extended health care benefits
What Does This Mean for New and Existing PrEP Clinic Patients?
✅ No impact to our clinic services – All our appointments and lab testing remain free for all IFHP-eligible patients.
✅ Patients accessing PrEP with us will NOT be charged the $4 per prescription and will continue to pay $0.
